The house was intended for use by the client’s extended family, and thus required a fairly large amount of accommodation. As a holiday house it had to be robust; and placed on a sensitive site between mountain & the sea, it had to be un-ostentatious. It was thus decided to break up the dwelling into a number of smaller, traditional building forms, which were assembled around a courtyard.
Larger volumes, such as the garage/store, were recessed into the back dune. Stone was used to form a plinth, and natural materials (timber, latte, gravel) were used extensively to integrate the house into the landscape.
This project was awarded a South African Institute of Architects Award of Merit.
