Eco Beach House, Springerbaai

Status: Built

Springerbaai is an eco-estate close to Mosselbaai, with strict building regulation controls and very low densities. The house had to have a small footprint, low overall height and a thatch roof. The sites are all off-grid – although gas is used for cooking, solar energy provides electricity and hot water.

To increase accommodation, bunk beds are used for the kids rooms and loft space for additional beds. The house is cut into the slope so as to minimize its visibility, but angled down and into the slope, provid shelter from prevailing winds while still enjoying extensive sea views. For the purpose of shelter, the outdoor living area is located at the rear of the house, but as the middle sections of the house open up entirely by means of large internal sliding doors, this area still enjoys sea views through the house.
